Hiatus

Hey guys, I must apologise for the long break between posts. It’s a long story but to cut to the chase, all of Murdok’s tools had become somewhat outdated from the POS, accounting system, webstore you name it .. after 3 years we had quite simply grown out of our old skin.

So, with a new lease on life for Murdok just around the corner I thought I should give you a little heads up so you know why we’ve been so quiet on the social front for the past 6 months. From here in you’ll be sure to receive constant cultural updates, party, sale, comps and giveaway info and basically anything else we find ammusing surrounding Murdok right here from here in.

Until next update, I urge you to have a little squizz at our shiney new webstore at www.murdok.com and click the little like icon if you’re into the new look. Oh, and yes … we also now proud owners of the dot com meaning that now for the first time we are also trading and shipping to every country in every region for a small freight flat rate.

So please, stay tuned. It’s nice to be back!

This must be the place

As most of you know Murdok is based in Manly, NSW, Australia and we never take for granted just how beautiful this part of the world we live in is.

This morning at 5.04, 30/11/12 I had a calling from the earth to document it’s sunrise and witness it in all it’s glory and I’m so glad I did.

Blessed. BS

Murdok Women’s Summer has arrived!

First of all, we must apologize for the lack of communication with you all over the past couple of months. Murdok HQ decided we needed to knuckle down and program a newly developed high end point of sale system so that we may grow and blossom and continue to deliver to you the most amazingly unusual, eccentric, exotic and wonderful pieces from our own boroughs and from afar.

Enough of the formalities already …

So then, we finally decided to come of age and complete our first ever Murdok range shoot for summer 2012. By popular and public demand we had the privilege to utilize Manly’s own wonder girl model Miss Lyndsey Anne and Swedish import make up artist extraordinaire Pernilla Ackerfors. Many thanks guys … It was a real gas and a pleasure working with you both!

The summer ranges are amazing this year! Jam packed with generous dollops of color and delight from the likes of Something Else, Zoologie!, Handsom and Stussy for good measuer.

We personally are gobsmacked by the consistency that Natalie Wood, designer of Something Else has achieved this summer. Her inspiration stems from club, to beach, to dining room and there’s a something appropriate for all within this collection.

The looks can now be seen in store or online at www.murdok.com

Jack White live review – Hordern Pavilion, Sydney 2012

I wasn’t actually expecting too much from this show as I’d only managed a brief listen to ‘Blunderbuss’ previous to this performance. However, within 15 minutes I was totally hooked and mesmerized by buzz saw solo’s and by the magic that is Jack White.

Jack White manages to weave you in naturally, playing many varying musical styles and genres with such grace. I couldn’t  help but hear the distinct influence of Robert Plant and Jimmy Page in this live performance among many others.

The set traversed through White Stripes, Dead Weather and Raconteurs territory along with some early blues, country and hillbilly covers thrown in. The lap steel and honky tonk piano solo’s left me feeling a little confused thinking I was in some oversized, overcrowded  country barn dance hall.

It was also interesting to see how Jack managed to conduct the show alongside the bands drummer. They seemed to be the heartbeat of the band, quite reminiscent of how he used to interact with Meg at White Stripes shows. That said, it was also refreshing to hear musicians that could complement Jack and play with great technical skill and power which I personally feel lacked with the White Stripes. But hey, that’s just me.

You couldn’t help but feel you where witnessing something a little bit special knowing that most people in attendance would one day say to their children ‘Yes son, your mother and I witnessed Jack White live way back in 2012 and yes it was quite righteous indeed!’

Jack White ‘Blunderbuss’ was written, produced and recorded by Jack White and released on his own record label ‘Third Man’ through XL Recordings / Columbia.

Available now in all good record stores.

Paying props to musical icons with great fashion sense

If you’ve ever been to Murdok then sure enough you’re very much aware that the sounds you hear have a certain musical maturity that makes you want to stay a little longer to discover which musical journey is coming next.

Coming from a musical background, Murdok owner Ben Stacey stemmed from a DJ and musician background (Bodyjar) and it’s not unusual for him to be spending countless hours noodling on a Serato club set, piecing together a re-edit or creating play lists for the store.

Ben explains, I’ve always been open with my musical tastes even as a little boy. I have a particular love for good groove and funk of all styles. Funk is the back bone to most of my Dj sets and most certainly comes across within the store play lists alongside indie rock, electronica, disco, beats and a general mash bag of what I like to call eklectika.

That said, hours upon hours are invested creating the play lists for the store, downloading tunes to create the right modes and vibes for every hour throughout each individual day of the week.

So then, we thought this might be a nice opportunity to pay props to some of the stand out front men who have not just helped shape the sound of Murdok but bring inspiration to the fashion style in which Murdok’s men’s clothing lines are directed and influenced by over the years.

James Lavelle promoted his image, his label Mo Wax and his band UNKLE through utilizing Japanese hipster label A Bathing Ape throughout the 90′s.

Mike was always the more stylish one of the 3 and always super creative being super original and defining himself  and creating an original style that every cool skate / beats kid around the globe tried to mirror at one stage or another. Many of which had no idea it stemed from Mike and his label X-Large.

Ian Brown of the Stone Roses

Ian Brown helped shape his image in the 90′s from having the freshest wardrobe wearing high end reputable street wear designer label A Bathing Ape, Adidas, Carhaart, X-Large and Speiwak .

David Byrne was always unique in every way particularly with his fashion. Always looking super clean cut and sporting a suit both tailored and mega over sized causing him to dance flippy floppy.

David Bowie throughout Aliddan Sane and Space Oddity periods had the most incredible wardobes. His make up and outfits made you convinced that this cat was actually a spider from Mars

Damon Albarn

Damon’s get up in the early 90′s dripped of raving indie kid from the burbs regularly sporting traditional indie op shop zip ups, baggy skate jeans, fitted tee’s and trainers.

Thom Yorke along with Ian Brown and James Lavelle enjoyed sporting the oversized hooded jacket with uber high neckline which became the stalwart jacket to have for every indie guy turned beats kid in the mid to late 90′s.

Robert Smith is solely responsible for super oversized mohair jumpers, extremely teased hairdos and platforms however in early 80′s around Faith / Seventeen Seconds period Roberts look was well striped back and natural taking inspiration from Sid Vicious and the general 70′s UK punk rock movement.

Mick Jagger in particular gave the Strokes among many other indie artists their identity. Mick regularly wore fitted jeans, op shop college tees, tasteful draped shirting and volley sneaks.
